Humanistic Play Therapy
(Child-directed)
Humanistic Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate therapeutic approach whereby children’ direct sessions and play freely without a set agenda. The trained therapist uses the powers of play, the therapeutic relationship, and therapeutic skills to support children to express, explore and understand their inner world through play.
Play creates an opportunity for children to distance themselves from their challenges or fears they may be facing. Children can project or play out challenges from their real-world, into the safe and contained world of play, where they can view them from another perspective free from guilt, worry or real-world consequences. When children can understand and create meaning to their experiences and emotions, they can gain mastery over their feelings.
